PM Modi Declares “Not an Era of War” Amid West Asia Turmoil; Strengthens India-Cyprus Ties

Nicosia, June 2025 – In a landmark diplomatic moment during his state visit to Cyprus, Indian PM Modi reiterated a powerful global message: “This is not an era of war.” The statement, made amid heightened tensions in West Asia, underscores India’s growing role as a stabilizing voice on the global stage while simultaneously deepening its strategic and economic ties with Cyprus and the broader European Union (EU).

This marks the first visit by an Indian PM to Cyprus in over two decades and comes at a crucial time, when geopolitical alignments are rapidly shifting due to escalating regional conflicts and trade realignments.

Diplomatic Outreach During Turbulent Times

As the Israel-Iran conflict intensifies and West Asia remains volatile, PM Modi’s reiteration of peace echoes his earlier statements made during the Russia–Ukraine war. The Indian Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need for dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolution, a stance that continues to garner support from many developing nations.

“In these challenging times, it’s imperative that the world listens to reason, not rhetoric,” Modi said alongside Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.

The message is also strategically timed, as India balances its traditional ties with countries in West Asia and leverages relationships across Europe and the Mediterranean.

Strengthening India-Cyprus Bilateral Relations

PM Modi’s visit resulted in the unveiling of a comprehensive bilateral roadmap that will provide a strategic framework for India–Cyprus cooperation over the coming decade. Both nations agreed to deepen collaboration in the following sectors:

  • Defence and maritime security
  • Digital payments and fintech
  • Tourism and cultural exchange
  • Cybersecurity and counter-terrorism
  • Energy cooperation and green transition

President Christodoulides hailed India as a “natural partner” for regional stability and economic growth, particularly as Cyprus prepares to take over the EU Council Presidency in 2026.

Economic Highlights: Trade, Technology & UPI Integration

A significant component of the visit was focused on economic cooperation. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need to fast-track the much-anticipated India–EU Free Trade Agreement, expressing hope that negotiations could conclude by the end of 2025.

This would be a massive boost to both Indian and European markets, particularly in pharmaceuticals, technology services, and green energy.

Cyprus, which is increasingly becoming a hub for fintech innovation, will also integrate India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) into its digital infrastructure. This will enable seamless cross-border digital payments, a move that could transform business and tourism flows between the two nations.

IMEC and Strategic Connectivity

Cyprus is positioned as a crucial stop on the ambitious India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)—a transcontinental logistics and energy initiative backed by India, the EU, and the US. Modi stressed Cyprus’s potential as a key gateway linking India to the Mediterranean and European markets.

Through IMEC, goods, energy supplies, and data could be transferred efficiently across three regions, reducing dependence on traditional chokepoints like the Suez Canal and bypassing politically unstable areas.

Defence & Security: A Growing Partnership

Both nations have agreed to initiate joint naval exercises in the Mediterranean Sea to enhance maritime security. With India’s expanding naval presence and Cyprus’s geostrategic location, this partnership could be pivotal in maintaining open sea lanes and monitoring illegal arms and human trafficking in the region.

Modi also reaffirmed India’s support for Cyprus’s territorial sovereignty, subtly opposing Turkey’s occupation of the northern part of the island.

Cultural Diplomacy and Symbolic Recognition

In a symbolic gesture, President Christodoulides awarded PM Modi with Cyprus’s highest civilian honor—a move that reaffirms the warmth between the two nations. Modi accepted the award on behalf of the Indian people and emphasized shared democratic values and cultural heritage.

Additionally, both leaders discussed the possibility of launching a direct air route between Delhi and Nicosia, aimed at promoting tourism and student exchanges.

What This Means for India

This visit is not just symbolic—it is strategic. India is asserting its diplomatic independence by engaging with all major players across regions, from the Middle East to Europe. At a time when many countries are forced to choose sides, India’s principle of “strategic autonomy” allows it to lead by example.

Moreover, by establishing corridors like IMEC, pushing digital payments via UPI, and aligning with smaller EU nations like Cyprus, India is weaving together an economic and geopolitical web that strengthens its global stature.

What’s Next?

India’s next move will be closely watched. With a packed diplomatic calendar including visits to Austria and Italy, the government seems keen to consolidate its position as a key economic and geopolitical player.

If the India–EU Free Trade Agreement is indeed finalized by the end of the year, and if IMEC begins implementation by early 2026, Modi’s Cyprus visit will likely be remembered as a defining moment in modern Indian diplomacy.

Final Word

PM Modi’s message—“this is not an era of war”—rings loud amid a world increasingly drifting toward conflict. His Cyprus visit has not only rekindled bilateral ties but also paved the way for an India–EU partnership built on peace, progress, and shared prosperity.
