The visuals have raised national outrage, not just because of the crime, but because of the sheer audacity with which the alleged killer stood beside the victim’s grieving family — a gesture now seen as cold and manipulative.
The Honeymoon Murder Case That Shocked the Nation
What started as a seemingly normal honeymoon trip to Meghalaya has turned into a headline-making murder mystery. Raja Raghuvanshi, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, married Sonam Raghuvanshi on May 11, 2024. Less than two weeks later, he was found dead in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls.
According to Times of India, Raja was thrown off a cliff during a trek on May 23. Initially presumed to be an accident, police later uncovered signs of foul play — his throat was slit, and his wallet and phone were missing.
As the story evolved, it exposed a chilling plot allegedly orchestrated by his wife, Sonam, and her lover Raj Kushwaha, who remained in Indore but is said to have coordinated the murder with hired killers.

Viral Funeral Footage Adds a New Dimension
The case took an even darker turn when a viral video showed Raj Kushwaha participating in Raja’s funeral rites. Not only did he attend the cremation, but he also hugged and comforted Sonam’s father, even driving people to and from the ceremony.
This shocking behavior—acting as a supportive friend while allegedly knowing about the murder plot—has left netizens and investigators stunned. “Trusted like a son but pretended to share grief,” wrote one user on social media, echoing widespread outrage.

Police Break Down the Chilling Conspiracy
According to police investigations reported by India Times, Sonam maintained contact with Raj throughout her honeymoon. Raj allegedly hired three men — Akash Rajput, Vishal Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi — who joined the couple under the guise of trekking companions.
After distracting Raja during the trek, the accused men allegedly attacked him and pushed him into the gorge, where his body lay undiscovered for days. They then returned to their hometowns, believing their crime would remain undetected.
Meanwhile, Sonam returned to Indore, initially faking grief, before vanishing. She was later found wandering on a highway in Uttar Pradesh, claiming she was abducted. However, interrogation revealed inconsistencies in her story.
Phone Records & Surveillance: Crucial Breakthrough
Authorities told TOI that call data records showed frequent communication between Sonam and Raj before, during, and after the trip. These digital breadcrumbs were key in cracking the case.
The murder weapons, Raja’s missing phone, and other belongings are now under forensic investigation. Police have also confiscated CCTV footage from Indore, which shows Raj allegedly discussing the murder plans with co-conspirators prior to the crime.
The Suspected Motive: Love, Control & Greed?
While the official motive is still under investigation, officers believe the core reasons were romantic and psychological manipulation. Sonam and Raj were reportedly in a long-term relationship before Sonam’s arranged marriage to Raja. Raj allegedly influenced Sonam to marry Raja only to eliminate him later and reunite.
Some sources allege the duo aimed to eventually take over Raja’s property and assets. However, Sonam’s family continues to claim she is innocent and is being framed.
They’ve called for a CBI inquiry, suspecting that deeper political or financial interests may be at play. But as of now, the case is being handled by Meghalaya Police with assistance from Madhya Pradesh authorities.
